Asacol 400mg Tablet belongs to a class of drugs called 'anti-inflammatory drugs used to treat ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease. Ulcerative colitis is a type of chronic inflammatory bowel disease that causes inflammation of the large intestine lining (colon). It produces ulcers on the colon's lining, which may cause bleeding and discharge of pus and mucus.
Asacol 400mg Tablet contains Mesalazine, which works by inhibiting the production of certain chemical substances, such as prostaglandins, that cause pain and swelling. Thereby, it reduces inflammation (swelling) in the intestines and provides relief from symptoms such as stomach pain or bleeding.
Take Asacol 400mg Tablet as prescribed. You are advised to use Asacol 400mg Tablet for as long as your doctor has recommended it for you based on your medical condition. In some cases, you may experience diarrhoea, stomach pain, headache, nausea, vomiting or flatulence (gas). Most of these side effects of Asacol 400mg Tablet do not require medical attention and gradually resolve over time. However, if the side effects persist or worsen, please consult your doctor.
Avoid taking Asacol 400mg Tablet if you are allergic to Mesalazine or any other medicines. Asacol 400mg Tablet should be used with caution in the elderly. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, please inform your doctor before taking Asacol 400mg Tablet . Mesalazine tablet is not recommended for children below two years, and granules are not recommended for children below six years. However, Asacol 400mg Tablet should be given to children only if advised by a doctor. Avoid taking Asacol 400mg Tablet if you have severe kidney failure. If you have stomach pain or cramps, severe headache, fever or rash, stop taking Asacol 400mg Tablet immediately and consult a doctor.

- Pregnancy interaction:
- Asacol 400mg Tablet may be unsafe to use during pregnancy.Animal studies have shown adverse effects on the foetus, however, there are limited human studies. The benefits from use in pregnant women may be acceptable despite the risk. Please consult your doctor.
- Expert advice:
- Do not take the medicine if you are allergic to mesalazine, to any other content in the medicine, aspirin and other salicylate drugs. Do not take mesalazine if you have severe kidney or liver problems, blood disorders or uncontrolled bleeding. Do not take mesalazine if you have stomach or bowel ulcers or a history of bleeding ulcers, glucose-galactose mala absorption, Lapp-lactase deficiency or galactose intolerance. Doctor’s advice should be considered in case of patients with liver, kidney or lung disease (asthma). Avoid taking mesalazine if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant or breast-feeding.

- Is Asacol a steroid : Asacol is not a steroid, NSAID, immunosuppressant, blood-thinner or sulfa drug. It is an anti-inflammatory drug|Can I take Asacol forever? : No. Asacol should only be taken for the duration prescribed by your doctor|Is Asacol safe? : Yes. Asacol is relatively safe if used as recommended. In case of any side-effects, consult your doctor|Can I take Asacol with Advil : Asacol (mesalazine) can be taken with Nyquil, Tylenol (paracetamol), Gaviscon (sodium alginate) and Imodium (loperamide) only if prescribed by your doctor. It should not be taken with Advil (ibuprofen) or aspirin|Does Asacol cause bleeding : Asacol may cause liver problems, immune suppression, hair loss, or bleeding. If you experience any such symptoms, please consult your doctor|Does Asacol affect fertility or sperm count? : There is no evidence of Asacol affecting fertility, but it may very rarely and reversibly reduce sperm count.
